Special Considerations for ABSL-3 Animal Facilities

This class will build upon the content covered in the BSL-3 Design and Operations program by delving into special considerations for ABSL-3 facilities. By participating in discussions and practical exercises, you’ll gain knowledge to support safe, effective, and compliant animal research operations.
Topics will include:
- Risk Assessment when Animals Bite, Scratch, and Naturally Carry Pathogens
- Caging Options for Different Sizes of Animals
- HVAC Enhancements to meet ABSL-3 Biosafety & Chemical Safety Needs
- Workflow for Different Lab Layouts
- Inspection & Regulation Considerations
- Decontamination & Waste Management, including Carcass Disposal
- Occupational Health in Support of Animal Research
Led by a veterinarian with substantial high containment experience, and two animal biosafety experts, this class will present an opportunity for veterinarians, biosafety professionals, engineers, and research professionals to share their perspectives on designing and operating safe ABSL-3 facilities.
Note: This class is part of a series, beginning with a virtual class on Fundamentals of BSL3 taking place on March 13, 2025. On April 7 – 8, a class, “Advanced BLS-3 Practices and Procedures,” on Tuesday, April 8th there is a complementary tour of Duke’s Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL), a class on “BSL-3 Design and Operation” takes place April 9-10, and “Proper Shipment of Biological Materials,” on April 12.
