Follow a real-world case study from initial risk assessment through a variety of scenarios and explore how changes in a project can affect practices, PPE, and other controls. Each section of this class will consist of small group interactive learning activities that can be used in participants’ own facilities.  Competencies will be explored through case studies, personalized instruction and hands-on activities in a BSL-3 training lab.

Participants Will Learn How To:

• Conduct risk assessments as an ongoing process through the life of a BSL-3 project
• Explain operational considerations for BSL-3 facilities
• Select and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Ensure safe operation of Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs)
• Deal with occupational health issues in BSL-3 labs
• Plan for and respond to emergencies
• Conduct (almost) painless laboratory inspections
• Ensure biosecurity

Note: This class is part of a series, beginning with a virtual class on Fundamentals of BSL-3 taking place on March 13, 2025. On Tuesday, April 8th there is a complementary tour of Duke’s Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL), a class on “BSL-3 Design and Operation” takes place April 9-10, “Special Considerations for ABSL-3 Facilites” on April 11, and “Proper Shipment of Biological Materials,” on April 12.
