This two-day course provides a comprehensive overview of Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on laboratory workshops.  On the first day, smoke and particle counters are used to demonstrate proper placement and use of BSCs. On the second day, the class divides into small groups to observe each of the NSF 49 certification tests. In addition, a guided tour of a BSC manufacturing facility provides a unique opportunity to understand the “nuts and bolts” of BSCs.

Participants will learn to:

• Use basic airflow terminology and explain exhaust options
• Define classes and types of BSCs
• Determine which BSC is appropriate for an application
• Explain factors to consider in the placement of BSCs in the laboratory
• Describe how to work effectively in a BSC
• Describe decontamination methods & associated hazards
• Explain the difference between microbiological testing and certification
• Provide an overview of each of the BSC certification tests
