Proper Shipment of Biological Materials

This half-day course includes instruction on classifying, packing, and labeling of domestic and international shipments of biological material. Categories covered include Infectious Substances, Patient Specimens, Genetically Modified Organisms and Microorganisms, Dry Ice, and other relevant materials. Instruction covers relevant sections of the U.S. Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR Parts 171-178) and the International Air Transport Association’s Dangerous Goods Regulations. Import, export, and interstate transfer permit requirements is also covered. Course content is provided using a combination of short lectures, hands-on activities, and group exercises. A certificate is provided to each participant who successfully completes the course.
Note: This class is part of a series, beginning with a virtual class on Fundamentals of BSL3 taking place on March 13, 2025. On April 7 – 8, a class, “Advanced BLS-3 Practices and Procedures,” on Tuesday, April 8th there is a complementary tour of Duke’s Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL), a class on “BSL-3 Design and Operation” takes place April 9-10, and “Special Considerations for ABSL-3 Animal Facilities,” on April 11.
